14-Year Old Girl Dies in Locked BMW Due to Heat Stroke

Tragedy struck the small town of Madera, California, last Wednesday. A 14-year old girl died in a locked BMW 3 Series due to heat stroke. First reports of the local media claimed the car's lock mechanism was faulty but that proves only how little they know about a car's workings.

In any post 2000 automobile, locking it with the key fob renders the interior locks unusable and completely shuts down the car. That means that the horn will also be rendered unusable (that's in stock cars, of course, we're not talking about any kind of modifications here).

However, the father of the girl (struck with grief, we're sure) claims that the BMW was malfunctioning and that when he bought the car he wasn't told of the car's locking system (not that it would matter, since all cars work the same).

It seems like the girl somehow fell asleep inside the car and someone decided to lock it from the outside. Otherwise, the whole thing doesn't make sense. The car cannot lock itself therefore someone must've done it.

The whole case is kind-of shady. If someone really locked her in the car, they should be held accountable. The fact that she fell asleep and woke up in panic could justify the fact that she failed to call help. But even so, who doesn't have a cell phone these days? She was going to school in California and she was 14, how come she didn't use her phone to call for help?

We'll leave you to decide whether this was the car's fault or just human error.

PS: In case you ever face this situation, just remove the headrest from the front seats (by pulling upwards) and use the metal rods to break a window. Don't try it with your bare hands, you'll never make it.
