We always enjoy showing you what happens when a tuner that finds itself on the wrong side of mechanical decency releases a new monstrous project. The Golf Mk I in the clip below, which goes by the name of 16Vampir, perfectly fits that pattern and yet there are certain occasions on which things go wrong.
No, this senior Golf hasn’t made a name for itself out of chewing on its own parts, but this is what recently happened to the contraption, which destroyed its driveshaft. The unwanted adventure happened while the VW was trying to put its 1,150 hp to the ground with the help of its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

We’ve talked about this Golf on numerous occasions, which only comes natural when we have a machine powered by a two-liter turbo that churns out 1,151 hp and 1,000 Nm (lb-ft) at the wheels. Most of the credit for those ridiculous numbers goes to a turbine that works 55 psi (3.8 bar), while the engine is fed with E85.

You might be tempted to think this kind of mechanical failure episodes happen on a regular basis with such an extreme setup, but this is not the case, at least according to Boba Motoring, the German tuner who built the Golf.

In fact, the aftermarket developer claims this is the first time the driveshaft has failed after four years of abuse. And, as you can imagine, these guys don’t exactly baby their project cars.

From extremely brutal all-wheel-drive launches to high-speed sprints that would make a Suzuki Hayabusa jealous, their Golfs (yes, there are more of them) are always pushed to the limit.

Returning to the 16Vampir, the Volkswagen was back in drag racing action half an hour after the driveshaft failure. And for those of you who are wondering about what such a Golf can do in a quarter mile race, we’ll mention its 8.39s run at 177 mph (285 km/h).
