Ducati hinted at a new Scrambler that is reportedly envisaged by Borgo Panigale. However, if you were hoping for a smaller machine, you'll be disappointed. If your dreams were, by any chance, directed in the opposite direction, you have reasons to be happy in anticipation of a bigger and meaner Scrambler.
Apparently, it could be the 1078cc engine that used to power the "big Monster" EVO machines until 2013. This means that the base version of this mill, which used to produce 100 horsepower at 7,500 rpm, will have to be updated to meet the Euro 4 requirements, with a yet unknown impact on its specs.
With 76 lb-ft (103.1 Nm) of torque available at 6,000 revs per minute, the Desmodue Evoluzione (desmodromic valve actuation, two valves per cylinder) could be a good starting point for a big-bore scrambler, especially if the peak torque point could be lowered a bit.
Building on a platform whose strong and weak points are known means that more than half the job is done, and Euro 4 compliance and certain tweaks are all that's left. Engineering can focus on improving the old recipe and bikes using the EVO mill will simply make people happy and keep the money flowing.
And in case you have any doubts that such recipes work, just peer over the Alps in BMW Motorrad' courtyard and analyze the success of the R nineT.
