A couple of days ago we reported that the MINI Oxford Plant in England will be celebrating 100 years of automotive excellence this month. This week a centenary exhibition was opened in the new Visitor Centre at MINI Plant Oxford. The event was inaugurated by UK's Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and Harald Krueger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
Over 100 years ago, the first Morris Oxford was build here by William Morris, the founder of the prestigious plant. Over the years there have been eight custodians of the Oxford production facility beginning with Morris Motors and up to today's BMW ownership.
In 1913 the weekly vehicle production was of just 20 cars. A century later, the plant is responsible for manufacturing over 11.65 million cars, for 14 different brands. Over the years, almost 500,000 people were employed here. Today the Oxford factory needs only 3,700 associates to manufacture 900 MINIs every day and a total of 4,500 units per week.
Even UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron, congratulated MINI's plant for its outstanding performance: "The Government is working closely with the automotive industry so that it continues to compete and thrive in the global race and the success of MINI around the world stands as a fine example of British manufacturing at its best. The substantial contribution which the Oxford plant has made to the local area and the British economy over the last 100 years is something we should be proud of."
"We have ambitious growth plans for MINI and are now preparing for the launch of the next generation of the MINI family. We will grow the model range in the coming years and our volume expectations in the medium term will see MINI reaching well beyond the current 300,000 annual car sales worldwide," said Harald Krueger when asked about future plans.
