1,000 Orders for Tesla Model S and Counting

Although the model isn't projected to arrive on the market sooner than 2011, Tesla Motors says it has received more than 1,000 orders for Model S, an all-electric sedan that was launched on March 26. The car is going to be a real hit, the parent company predicts, with the anticipated base price of $49,900 attracting more and more customers every day.

"The Model S is a better value than much cheaper conventional cars," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Despite the enormous environmental benefits, lower total cost of ownership will soon become the primary motivation for consumers to evolve from gas guzzlers to EVs."

To give you an idea, Tesla Model S provides enough room for seven people and can travel up to 300 miles per charge, which is pretty outstanding since we're talking about an electric car - most of the current models are only traveling up to 60 miles.

Tesla Motors expects to record at least the same success as with the Roadster, despite the fact that the base price of this model is $101,500. However, the company has already delivered more than 400 Roadsters to customers so far, according to figures provided by the electric car manufacturer. A thing worth mentioning is that Tesla says a Roadster could result in lifetime savings of at least $26,000 compared with a similarly priced gasoline sports car.

"Some Roadster customers are sports car enthusiasts. Some are environmentalists. Some care about energy security. All are discriminating and value conscious consumers," Musk said. "Now we're seeing the same attributes in customers who opt for the Model S. People who drive Teslas refuse to compromise on value, performance or efficiency."
