When Audi introduced the Sport Quattro back in the 80s, the carmaker was making efforts to homologate its Group B rally car. The year was 1984 and having a street legal machine that could deal with the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 4.8 seconds wasn’t enough.
Sure, that kind of performance was monstrous, allowing the rally-bred German contraption to play in supercar territory. But the 80s were all about showing off your status and the Sport Quattro was... well... pig ugly.
None of the lucky 200 who got to buy one cared, though. With a turbocharged 2.1-liter inline-five developed with Porsche, which delivered 302 hp and an abuse-prepared four-wheel-drive system, this thing was a bomb dropped on conventional go-fast machines.
While the extreme dangers of Group B rallying quickly brought the end of that racing era, we’ve come across one guy who isn’t afraid to drive a car that’s just as fierce on the road.
We’re talking about the owner of the Audi Sport Quattro in the video below.
These days, 302 hp sounds like the kind of output that doesn’t necessarily recommend a car for being memorably fast. But that doesn’t apply to this retro Ingolstadt machine. Oh no, this Audi packs a bit more than 302 hp.
In fact, the Sport Quattro has over three times its original output, being able to hit 1,000 hp, depending on the boost setting.
The absolutely insane Audi was recently caught on camera in the UK. It takes a trained eye to spot the subtle visual clues that point to the car's bespoke side.
For one thing, the roll cage inside this Sport Quattro could tip one off on its special abilities. Even so, this contraption remains a sleeper, which is amusing, considering how far the Audi designers went with details such as the flared wheel arches.
It’s almost difficult to believe somebody took one of the 200 original cars and tripled its output. Especially when these Sport Quattros can trade hands for as much as half a million dollars these days. Then again, we’re not here to question, but to rejoice.
