If every big city in the world would adopt hybrids and EVs at half of London’s pace, the world would have a real chance of becoming a better, greener and cleaner place that it is right now.
This time, it’s car rental business Avis serving the environment after signing up a batch of 100 Toyota Yaris Hybrid models that will serve its London region customer fleet. They’re not the first to adopt alternative technologies for urban trips but they seem to think that the Yaris Hybrid is the car they need for pleasing their clientele:

“Yaris scores highly in many respects agains our requirements for an inner city hire car; it is easy to drive and reliable. The ultra-low emissions secured by its hybrid system make it a unique proposition in its class in achieving exemption from the London congestion charge,” explained Jane Goodwin, Avis UK Fleet Procurement Manager.

We’re pretty sure the mini-car’s CO2 emissions of just 74 g/km had a lot to do with this decision. The same stands for the 3.3 l/100 km fuel consumption figure measured in the city. For now, the first Yaris Hybrid models will be available at major gateway locations, including Heathrow and Stansted airports as well as in central London.

In the following weeks, Avis will add more cars to the fleets at other key locations like Gatwick and Luton airports. This decision shouldn't surprise anyone as last year Toyota announced that 12% of all they sold in Europe were Yaris, Auris, Prius or Verso hybrids.

This also seems to prove that people are beginning to understand that a hybrid does same you some pretty money as opposed to a diesel engine, especially when most of the driving is done in urban environments.
