General Motors recently celebrated the sale of 1 million vehicles on the Chinese market in 2010, with the millionth customer, Lu Weiwei from Shanghai, purchasing a new Buick LaCrosse equipped with OnStar.
The company held a ceremony at the GM China and GM International Operations Headquarters in Shanghai, where GM China Group President and Managing Director Kevin Wale and Shanghai OnStar Telematics General Manager Jon Hyde announced that Mr. Lu would receive three years of free OnStar service as a special gift.
“Achieving 1 million sales in May is a new milestone for GM and China’s automotive industry,” said Wale. “It was only three years ago that GM became the first global automaker to reach the million mark in China in a calendar year.”
“GM has shown its commitment to China by forming strong partnerships and offering an unequaled lineup of brands and products tailored for our local customers,” Wale added. “We appreciate the support that we have received back from the people of China. GM has honored that support by continually rolling out new and upgraded vehicles - from passenger cars to commercial vehicles – that are industry leaders in design, technology and fuel economy.”
GM runs its Chinese operations through 10 joint ventures, with the businesses covering the production of vehicles and powertrains, sales and aftersales, engineering and design, telematics and automotive financing, and investment. Last year, GM and it JVs sold their 1 millionth vehicle on August 12 and ended the year with a total sales volume of 1.8 million vehicles.
