Spyshots: 2011 Jaguar XJ

The forty one year old British luxury sedan will soon enter its seventh generation, as the manufacturer is now testing, under heavy camouflage, the early prototype of the next generation XJ. Since the spyshots are not as revealing as we might have hoped, it's enough to turn to Ian Callum, Jaguar's design director, to confirm that the new JAG will be very different, from the design standpoint, than what we are used to from an XJ by now.

The new design will be much more daring than in a Jaguar XF, for instance. This is because up until now, sales figures on the current model haven't been as glamorous as the manufacturer would have hoped.

The fact that is almost impossible to truly distinguish the JAG underneath the layers and layers of disguise only adds to the speculation that the 2011 XJ will shock Jaguar enthusiasts, used with a certain design line.

As for the engines, the next generation Jaguar XJ is rumored to be fitted with a 3.0l turbodiesel and possibly a new 5.0l V8. The engine range could be larger, as the current generation for instance makes use of four different types of engines (1 diesel and three gasoline).

Interior wise, little is known about the direction in which the new XJ is headed. The word is that its manufacturer put a lot of effort into increasing the interior quality and functionality, but what else could we have expected from Jaguar?

The 2011 Jaguar XJ, code named X351 for the moment, will most likely make its debut in 2010, but surely new information will become available long before then.
