This year the PE's long suit, consequently, is its handling. In this regard, enduro bikes are penalized less than motocrossers for lagging behind technologically. Though the running gear is unchanged, Suzuki's engineers developed a good package the first time around. The full-cradle frame hooks to a box-section aluminum swing arm and produces straightforward geometry.

This was a great mix between a 125 and 250. These bikes were meant to be light like a 125 but with power characteristics more of a 250. At the time, the PE 175 was the most technologically advanced. It still had twin shocks until 1982, but regardless the bike outhandled the Yamaha IT 175 with it’s “Yamahop” rear suspension known to mysteriously kick out over roots and large bumps.

The heart of the PE was a 250cc two-stroke motor with heavy flywheels and reed-valve induction. The engine made only 28 hp (20.8 Kw) at 8,000 rpm but pulled like a freight train. Even regular PE riders were often amazed at how the PE could slog up the steepest climb, or through the most glutinous bog, with the reed petals clattering merrily away and the heavy flywheels keeping the motor turning.
