Four-wheel drive (4x4) comes standard on this Kawasaki, sending power to all 4 wheels when necessary for better traction and stability. The 4WD is part-time or "on-the-fly," giving you manual control of whether you're in 4x2 or 4x4 mode. Keep it in 2WD on paved roads and over mild terrain to save fuel and preserve the differentials, then pop it in 4WD right before the going gets rough.

This model is powered by a 4-valve, air-cooled, 4-stroke, 401cc engine, placing it in the midsize displacement class (400cc - 600cc class). The 8.6:1 compression ratio is 14% lower than the average utility Side by Side. A higher compression ratio is desirable because it means an engine can do the same amount of work with less fuel, leading to increased efficiency and power for a given engine size; high compression ratios are indicative of high performance.

Its carbureted fuel delivery system ensures a lower maintenance engine than one with EFI, but this simplicity comes at the cost of lower efficiency and higher emissions.

Powering the SX is a 401cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine that has a surprising amount of torque. You’re not going to win any drag races with the SX, unless the other person is walking or riding a bike. Top speed is about 25 mph, but that is ok. You really wouldn’t want or need it to go any faster. The engine will pull though. Head up a steep hill and you think you’re going to run out of power, but the little Kawie keeps on chugging along. Even with a load of gear, the Mule keeps on going.

The new Mule 4010 4x4’s industrial strength liquid-cooled 617cc V-twin engine is managed by a digital Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and is fed by a fuel injection system that compensates for variations in atmospheric pressure, engine and air temperature. This combination results in consistent starts and ultra-precise fuel metering, both of which help reduce fuel consumption and limit emissions. An automatic fast idle speed control activates when the engine is cold, eliminating the need for a manual choke. The ECU also regulates top engine speed, which means the Mule doesn’t need a mechanical governor.
