The 1987 Gilera ER 200 is powered by a two-stroke, liquid-cooled, 183cc, single cylinder powerplant that was mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a chain final drive and can reach a maximum power output of 26 horsepower at 7500 rpm.

The engine is the latest evolution of the KZ / KK road engine and is equipped with an APTS mechanical exhaust valve. Compared to the cousin, the engine adopts a new heat pump, a different carburetor for the Dell'Orto PHBH 28 carburettor and a new exhaust system suitable for an enduro.
