In 2011, at the Milan Motorcycle Show, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer introduced the Ducati 1199 Panigale, a sports bike named after the small manufacturing town of Borgo Panigale. The bike was powered by a 1,198cc engine, while in 2015, the maker announced a larger displacement Panigale machine.

In 2014, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer launched the Ducati 1199 Superleggera, which in English meant super light. The main focus of the 2014 Superleggera was weight saving, ultimately achieved through the use of exotic materials, such as magnesium, carbon fiber, and titanium.

The 2013 machine combined a cocktail of materials to achieve the best power-to-weight ratio. It is safe to say that they reached the best power-to-weight ratio, with an output power of more than 200 hp and a dry weight of 155 kg (342 lbs).

As for appearance, the 2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera packed standard features, such as a full fairing with a medium-sized windscreen, a single seat, an under-belly mounted exhaust system, a single-sided swingarm, and nine-spoke lightweight wheels.

At the bike's core was a 1,198cc four-stroke L-twin liquid-cooled engine fed by an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system, boasting 203 hp with a peak at 11,500 rpm and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) torque at 10,200 rpm.

The 2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera was one of the most exotic and desirable Ducati then and was manufactured in only 500 units.
