The upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe (C217) will be a game-changer for Mercedes-Benz. First of all because it will revert to a name that was only used officially between 1994 and 1996, after which it was changed to CL-Class – even though everyone knew the model was the Coupe of the S-Class.
Second of all, it represents the first time in recent history when it will also have a convertible version, as that hasn't happened since the 1960s.
Of course, we are not here to talk about the convertible S-Class, nor the “regular” S-Class Coupe, but about the S 63 AMG Coupe, which has been caught testing with carbon-ceramic brakes somewhere in Germany, with Frankfurt plates.
As you might already know, the S 63 AMG Coupe will feature the same M157 engine from the recently-launched S 63 AMG sedan. Its twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V8 will therefore offer 585 hp (577 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb ft) of torque.
Paired with all-wheel drive exclusively for the United States market, the S 63 AMG Coupe will reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds, 0.1 seconds less than the sedan counterpart thanks to a slightly lower weight, while the rear-wheel drive version will reach the same speed in 4.3 seconds.
With the S-Class Coupe to be launched at the North American Auto Show in January 2014, we're expecting the AMG version at or sometime near the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.
