Concept S-Class Coupe Breaks Hearts – Official Info and Photo Gallery

The Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe was just unveiled and we can positively say that we're already in love with it. There are probably very few people who were expecting such a gorgeous-looking model that looks almost production ready, but there are even less who might have something against its completely stunning sexiness.

Despite being derived from the W222 S-Class platform, the model's exterior design has almost zero design cues borrowed from its sedan sibling. The only borrowed features are the overall stance and the side character lines, while the center console is obviously based on the S-Class sedan as well.

Of course, we are talking about a concept car, but one that looks over 90% production-ready. Take away those slim exterior rear view mirrors, the 21-inch light-alloy wheels (265/35 R21 front and 295/35 R21 rear), buff the overall look for a bit less flashiness and chrome effects and you pretty much have the upcoming S-Class Coupe production car, set to be unveiled in the upcoming months - with the Detroit Auto Show in January 2014 being a distinct possibility.

Even the powertrain on the car isn't concept car-ish, with the 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V8 from the W222 S-Class sitting nicely under that long, swooping hood. With 455 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque, it is more than what such a large grand tourer would need to feel adequately powered.

Speaking of size, the Concept S-Class Coupe measures 5050 mm (198.8 in) in length, 1958 mm (77.1 in) in width and 1409 mm (55.5 in) in height, while its wheelbase measures 2945 mm (116 in). It might sound pretty huge, but it's actually almost identical with the outgoing CL-Class.

The only thing that gave us a downer were the side-view photos of the interior, in which the front seats seem to sit so far back that the rear seats would only be suited for amputees or children with tiny feet. We can somewhat relax thinking that it's just an image of a concept car.

Technology-wise, the Concept S-Class Coupe is also heavily based on the W222 S-Class sedan, with the “Intelligent Drive” array of gadgets making a show in themselves. You probably already know of the stereo camera, the magic body control suspension, the radars and the multitude of assistance systems from the sedan flagship, but there is also something new.

The car's infotainment system is using the MoodGrid software from music recognition service Gracenote, which makes it possible to listen to whatever music fits the mood in a completely different way. Based on a selected mood, the onboard software compiles a pre-selection of songs from a catalogue of 18 million tracks, making driving and listening to music a new and pleasurable experience in itself.
