Mercedes-Benz is First to Offer QR Code Rescue Cards on Its Vehicles

In a move that makes them the first at something once again, Mercedes-Benz just announced that it is including every three-pointed star vehicle with a QR code that offers relevant information about the car's safety information, which is usually included in a rescue card.
As most of you know, in serious accidents - where the vehicle involved has trapped its occupants inside – rescue services should be provided with quick access to the rescue card, which contains all the construction details specific to the specific car, such as the location of airbags, battery and fuel tank, so that equipment such as a hydraulic cutter (jaws of life) can be used safely.

“Electronic access by means of a QR code enables Mercedes-Benz to support in the rescue of accident victims,” says Christian Treiber, Director, Service & Parts for Passenger Cars at Mercedes-Benz Global Service & Parts. “The sticker is easy to retrofit to second-hand cars. So this safety benefit is something we can offer not just to owners of new Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”

The QR Code safety card has already been fitted as standard in all new Mercedes-Benz cars since the end of 2013, with smart models to begin wearing them from January 2014. It can also be retro-fitted free of charge to any second hand Mercedes-Benz built from 1990 onwards.

Good guy Mercedes-Benz has apparently waived its right to make a patent application so expect to find the technology at other car makers as well in the near future.
