Built by Honda of Canada Manufacturing Ltd., the MDX was sold under different nameplates depending on the market. While it was mostly known as the Acura MDX, the medium SUV was marketed as Honda MDX in Japan and Australia.

In a market crowded with luxurious four-wheel-drive SUVs such as the Mercedes’ ML or the BMW’s X5, the MDX was a strong presence that offered good value for the money.

The Honda MDX managed to outsell the already mentioned competitors in the US when it was first launched in 2001.

The standard equipment that came with the Honda MDX included independent front and rear climate control, power windows and power mirrors, cruise control, an electric sunroof, 17-inch alloys, foglights, power driver seat with memory, heated fron seats, leather upholstery and no less than 10 cupholders.

Safety was one of the MDX’s strongest points, with dual-stage twin front and side airbags, traction control, ABS with EBD, front seat belt pre-tensioners and five child seat anchors. The MDX managed to win a 5-star rating and the NCAP testing in the US.

A 3.5-liter VTEC engine that produced 256 hp and 345 Nm of torque was fitted with the refreshed version of the Honda MDX.

Other updates included redesigned wheels, a dual pipe exhaust and revised headlights and taillights to make it even more attractive.
