Based on a lengthened chassis shared with the Jeep Liberty, the Nitro had a distinctive styling with a truck-like grille borrowed from the RAM, inflated fender flares and big wheels up to 20-inch depending on the trim level.

For 2007, the small SUV was available in two trim levels, the SXT and the SLT.

The standard equipment included 16-inch wheels, air-conditioning, power windows, power mirrors and power locks, as well as a roof rack.

With the SXT, the Nitro was equipped with 17-inch alloys, body-colour exterior trim, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and the Load ’n Go system with a slide-out cargo floor.

The SLT was available with an R/T package that added 20-inch chrome wheels, a tweaked suspension and new cloth upholstery.

Stand-alone options available included leather upholstery, a runs roof, a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity and towing preparation.

The standard engine available for 2007 was a 3.7-liter V6 unit that developed 210 hp mated with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard with the SXT or an optional 4-speed automatic that was standard with the SLT.

A more powerful engine equipped with Nitro R/T, a 4.0-liter V6 the cranked out 260 hp, mated with a standard 5-speed automatic gearbox.

All trim levels came with an optional 4WD system.

Safety wise, the Nitro featured standard antilock disc brakes, stability control and full-length side curtain airbags.
