DODGE Dakota 1996-2004 Photos, engines & full specs

First released in 1997, this is the second generation of the model. The light pickup was a huge success and even sold 112,000 units in 1995. As the Ford Ranger sold 309.000, Dodge decided it's time for a new look.

The mid-size pickup did not suffer significant changes compared to its previous version. It does look a bit more muscular, but aside from that, at least when it comes to the exterior, it is almost the same old Dakota. During the 7 years of production, Dodge released 7 different engines for the model.

There were 5 trim levels available: ST, Sport, SXT (from 2001), SLT (top line) and R/T (high performance). The ST included an AM/FM stereo and a four speaker sound system. This version did not offer a 4-door double cab model.

The Sport version included sport-styled alloy wheels and was available with 6 engine types out of the 7. The SXT was introduced in 2001 and came with air conditioning, door locks with keyless entry (as an option) and a premium interior. The SLT was produced from 2001 to 2004. All engines were available on this trim level. The R/T had sport front seats, chrome-clad wheels, a 6-speaker audio system and the most powerful engine – 5.9 L V8. The Dakota maintained its body-on-frame design but also offered relatively good handling and smooth rides.
