2020 Audi Q7 specifications  

The Q7, a full size luxury SUV that until last year was Audi’s top of the range model, first appeared on the world’s roads in 2005. At the time, it was the carmaker’s first ever SUV.

Since then, the lineup of SUVs has expanded greatly, but the Q7 remains at the top of the offering in the segment. Now in its fourth generation, the car received a major facelift in June 2019.

The changes made to the model are meant to bring the nameplate closer to the carmaker’s current design language, but also adds some technical improvements.

1Exterior design & features

Compared to the version it replaces, the new Q7 is bigger. The SUV is 11 mm longer (total 5,063 mm), but remains pretty much the same when it comes to height and width: 1,741 mm and 1,970 mm, respectively.

The lines of the car, especially at the front, have changed to incorporate the new look of the Q family. The large octagon-shaped Singleframe is now fitted with six upright slats, and the two-part side air inlets and the sill area are cut deeper.

The shape of the headlights have changed as well, and they can now be specified in HD Matrix LED technology with Audi laser light.

At the rear, the main changes are the addition of a chrome strip, an extension of the horizontal body line that connects the flat rear lights with the graphics featured on them.

Optionally, the Q7 can be specified with an S Line exterior that adds a blade in the front bumper, accentuated underbody protection at the rear, full paint finish and 19-inch wheels.

2Interior design, features
and passenger space

The 2020 Audi Q7 comes as either a five- or a seven-seater. Regardless of its configuration, Audi says it “outdoes its direct competitors with interior length as well as headroom and elbow room in the front and rear.”

For the five-seater version, the car offers 865 liters of space in the boot, or 2,050 liters with the rear seats folded down. Access to the boot is done by means of an electric tailgate that optionally can be specified with a foot-activated system. All of the car’s rear seats can be moved individually fore/aft.

For the new version the carmaker came up with a new digital concept centered around two touchscreens that blend seamlessly with the surroundings – the top display, for instance, is almost invisible in its off state as it blends into the black decorative surface.

Interior lighting is a possibility for the Q7, but only as an option.


The Q7 comes with all the amenities required from a car in its class: four-zone automatic air conditioning, power-assist function to close the doors, a Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system and the air quality package with fragrancing and ionizer.

At the heart of the car’s interaction with the driver sits the MMI navigation plus system that blends a host of connectivity and infotainment features: LTE, Wi-FI hotspot, voice control, traffic information, and navigation with Google Earth.

Additionally, Amazon Alexa has been added to the MMI, as was the traffic light information that has just begun rolling out on Audi cars.

Optionally, aside for the two screens the car is equipped with, a head-up display can be specified.


At launch, the new Q7 is available with only two diesel engines, both coupled to an eight-speed tiptronic and the quattro permanent allwheel drive. A gasoline engine, as well as a plug-in hybrid variant, will be added to the range in fall 2019.

Both of Audi’s Q7 engines work in conjunction with a mild-hybrid systems that is supposed to kick in when needed and shave 0.7 liters / 100 from the fuel consumption figure.

The mild hybrid is used to recover up to 8 kW of power under braking and feed it back into the battery, but also influences the restart of the engine in certain conditions.


The Q7 is a big car packing powerful engines, therefore it needs a lot of technologies to keep it on the road. For the new version of the SUV Audi went to a lot of trouble to ensure stability and maneuverability are what they should be.

The car is fitted with standard air suspension and electromechanical active roll stabilization can be specified optionally as a means to reduce the body movements on uneven roads, and the car’s tendency to lean into the bend when traveling fast.

There is plenty of software making sure the car stays on the road and avoids danger, including adaptive speed assist, traffic jam assist and active lane assist. As a novelty, Audi introduces on the new Q7 the emergency assist, a feature that allows the car to automatically stop and start rescue measures if it detects the driver is inactive while the car is in motion.

The Q7 was until the birth of the Q8 in 2018 Audi’s largest SUV. As such, it has been one of the sought after models the brand has to offer in this segment.

In Europe, the sales figures for this car have been at a steady average of around 30,000 units for the past three years, while in the U.S. the numbers are even higher.

The facelift for the model does not bring a whole lot of changes, but it’s fresh, so it’s likely the numbers managed thus far will be maintained.

The 2020 Q7 launches on the European market in September 2019.
