Future BMW i3 Will Have Kymco Engine

The all-new BMW electric city car called i3 will definitely be something different for the whole automotive scene. However, most people wonder and, at the same time, worry about the small car's autonomy. For those people, BMW introduced the range extender.

We already knew something about i3's range extender, but we never expected something like this. All the previous speculations pointed towards a BMW Motorrad 2-cylinder engine that would provide energy for the electrical motor installed in the car.

Everyone expected BMW to use their own engine in the i3, even though technically it was from the Motorrad division. However, according to TheTruthAboutCars, i3's range extender will be provided by a Kymco, a Taiwanese company mostly known for its scooters.

It's true, BMW and Kymco did work together in the past but that was only for the Motorrad division. Back then, the BMW G450X dirt bike's engine was designed in Germany and built in Taiwan by Kymco. It seems that this will be the case for the i3 too.

We tend to think that this is just a rumor and BMW will rethink this strategy. However, since there is a precedent, anything can happen. We'll just have to wait and see.
