BMW didn't release any proper supercars apart from the M1 in all of its almost 100 years of existence. Rumors have been going around that the Bavarian company will release a new supercar in 2017, the year of its centenary.
The M1 is a true rare, collector's item. They only built 456 of those, thus making them one of the rarest pieces of BMW engineering ever made.
Today your best chance to see one would be at a museum or at a car show, but not on the street, being driven on a day to day basis.
The car really has a classic look that holds true to its origins. Built in 1979 the car's design wasn't very complicated, having simple lines along its body, making it look powerful.
The 2-door coupe had amazing specs for 1979. The engine was a mid-mounted, and had a 3.5-liter displacement from 6 cylinders. It produced 273 HP, took the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and got to a top speed of 260 km/h. Supercharged versions of the engine, specially prepared for competitions were able to push out 850 HP.
The design, as you can see, resembled Lamborghinis and that was no surprise, as it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro due to an agreement between BMW and Lamborghini.
All the 456 of the M1s were hand built between 1978 and 1981 by the dedicated people of the M division of BMW.
Every BMW fanatic should have the chance to see this car in the flesh, at least once in their lifetime, so spotting it on a Berlin street is a rare occasion.
