As business seems to be good over at BMW, the company might be looking to build yet another plant in the Americas, next to the one in the US and the Brazilian one that is currently under construction, close to the final touches.
In a recent interview, BMW NA CEO, Ludwig Willisch, said that the automaker has been in preliminary discussions with local authorities from Mexico, looking for a possibility of building a plant in one of the country's regions.
Currently under consideration, a free-trading agreement between NAFTA and the EU could further benefit the company and other European manufacturers as it would provide greater flexibility.
Since these kind of things take time, Willisch said that BMW will not take a radical decision in this regard until a conclusion is reached. And that could take a long time, so the Mexico plant might take a while to get started.
At the moment, BMW is focusing on the Brazilian plant, in Santa Catarina, where $261 million were invested and the fastest factory startup in automotive history took place, the first car leaving the plant only 23 month after starting the plant's construction.
