WESTERN STAR

WESTERN STAR

Western Star Trucks is an American manufacturer and distributor of heavy-duty custom trucks for long haul and vocational applications.

Based in Cleveland, Ohio and operating in Canada, Western Star Trucks began manufacturing mining, logging, and oil field heavy-duty trucks in 1967.

While continuing their classic product line, the company took a daring step during the '80s when they addressed a new type of customer, the highway tractor driver. The first steps in that direction were the cab headroom that improved driver visibility and the wrap-around dash.

4900 EX Long Haul - WESTERN STAR 4900 EX Long Haul The new market was tackled again in 1986 when the Supertilt hood was introduced. This innovation revamped the product line and introduced one of the earliest versions of the sloped hood to the ultra-conservative heavy truck industry. The features born at that time are still maintained today.

One year later, in 1987, the Western Star launched the Cornerstone chassis, a new platform that reduced cost, weight and complexity. The '90s are marked by the production of the extreme duty 6900 XD model and the significant contracts with the the Canadian military.

During the mid 90's, Western Star developed and launched the Constellation cab and sleeper. The cab featured a large size and superior comfort to the owner-operator market and maintained Western Star's tradition of welded steel cab construction.

In 1998, the company showcased the Star Light Sleeper, with a new design and an ultra-lightweight polypropylene honeycomb core, sandwiched between two sheets of high-grade aluminum. This was a major weight reduction achievement for Western Star and the industry.

In 2002, Western Star relocated production to Portland, Oregon, the new plant offering distinct advantages for Western Star from both a production and engineering standpoint. That same year, Western Star introduced the LowMax package, which included a sleek lower-profile stance and lots of custom stainless steel accessories. This was made available for several models.

4900 SA Expediter - WESTERN STAR 4900 SA Expediter Two thousand and three was a busy year for Western Star as three new models were introduced, the 82-inch Stratosphere, the 6900 XD and the 68-inch Stratosphere. The first of them is the only walk-through sleeper in the industry that incorporates roof-mounted air horns and marker lights.

One year later, in 2004, the 123-inch BBC 4900 FA LowMax was introduced, as well as a lighter-weight 4900 SA with a Stratosphere sleeper.

Western Star's Stratosphere family now includes 40- and 54-inch sizes as well as an 82-inch Ultra High model, the industry's largest sleeper by interior volume.

Western Star currently offers the 4900 FA, 4900 SA, 4900 EX, and 6900 XD models for three key segments: Owner-Operator, Premium Vocational and Specialty/Extreme.
