How to Fix 1986 Toyota Corolla AE 86 Gearbox Oil Leaks [Video]
Toyota Corolla AE 86’s gearbox assembly is composed by three main parts: the clutch housing, the main gearbox case and the rear output shaft with the gear selector assembly. If any of those parts are undamaged, then oil leaks may come from bad seals in between the three main components.
The following video tutorial shows you how to dismantle the AE 86’s gearbox rear assembly in order to replace its seal.
We warn you that this is a complex job and requires some technical skills, a large toolbox, time and safety precautions, as you will have to work underneath the car. Also, get yourself a pair of latex gloves, the transmission oil is toxic and can damage your skin.
So, the basic steps are to drain all the transmission fluid from the gearbox, dismantle the stick shifter, remove the drive shaft end from the transmission and then unbolt the rear assembly. After that carefully extract it from underneath the car.
Now, if you don’t find replacement seals for it, you can easily make them yourself as seen in the video. The man who made the tutorial also suggests to apply some silicone on the gaskets to ensure a proper seal.
After fitting the new seals, put everything back together and you are ready to go.
