Google’s Autonomous Toyotas Drive Better than Humans
According to the robot-car project chief, their Toyota Prius and Lexus RX controlled by the Google Chaffeur software are driving better than an average person. In fact, they drive better than a trained professional.
“We’re spending less time in near-collision states,” explained Chris Urmson at a robotics conference in Santa Clara, California Friday. “Our car is driving more smoothly and more safely than our trained, professional drivers.”
The results are based on several years and hundreds of hundreds of miles on public roads in California and Nevada. The cars accelerated and braked more smoothly than an average driver and could also maintain a safe distance between vehicles better than humans.
