It only takes a swift look on the new Porsche 911’s specs to notice that this car needs the dictionary to adopt a new word - “hyperengineering”. One might be tempted to think that this was Porsche’s reaction the 911 sales decline, but that’s not true.
The Zuffenhausen people did this because it’s their fetish and the 911 is the best person to play such games with. Thus, the Neunelfer received its current form - a metallic entity that’s ready to solve any equation someone could throw at sports car. It does follow its traditional “steady evolution” recipe, but it takes your stake and raises it.
Then again, it has to, as it must live up to its legend status. Over its five decades of existence, the Porsche 911 has written so many pages of automotive history that it’s hard to keep track of them.
First of all, nobody could ever accuse it of being an upstart. The 911 has modest origins, with its predecessor, the Porsche 356, being closely related to the VW Beetle. But the car has relentlessly worked is way up, generation after generation.
The 911 has to be the car with the most special editions in the world - there’s a specialized series or limited production model for everyone, from the Targa cruiser to the GT2 RS insanity. There’s also a great number of car aficionados who like to troll the 911, but this is not advisable - watch out, there’s an impressive number of old models still on the road, they may all get together and come after you!
The Porsche 911 is also great if you appreciate fine champagne - driving one has proved one of the easiest way of obtaining large quantities of the drink, as this is one of the most successful racers of all time.
We are currently in one of those interesting periods when two generations of the Porsche 911 overlap. The more hardcore models in the range are still based on the outgoing 997 generation, but the new 991 type is receiving more and more versions.
This is the perfect time to see what the new car can do then. Porsche’s financial side has already been taken care of by the Cayenne - over the two generations that have been launched so far, the SUV has managed to bring Porsche back into the profit zone. But the company’s image remains a task for the 911, so we had to see if the sports car can take it higher.
This was just one of the questions that went through our minds as we grabbed the keys to a Carrera S Cabriolet model. As we started our drive, the skies answered with rain, all the better to test the car’s versatility.Continue reading
