It's good times rolling at Zero Motorcycles, as the California-based manufacturer receives an important grant. The California Energy Commission (CEC) issues a grant worth $1,009,220 (€887,850 by today's exchange rate) to Zero Motorcycles, to help the company continue development and research in electric mobility.
Things are even better as the investors that are backing the company are matching the grant, so this leaves Zero with 2 million dollars that wait to be invested.
Zero is supposed to invest in continued research and development, as well as in expansion and assembly at the company's HQ in Scotts Valley.
We expect that Polaris re-organizes the e-bike business as soon as possible, because they know this is a real gold mine. In fact, we already told you that Victory is making a debut in the electric TT race in the Isle of Man this summer. Though not officially confirmed, we suspect that the e-Victory that will travel to Manx has a massive amount of Brammo underneath the shiny fairing.
Moreover, the competition is definitely going to grow stiffer, with Alta (RedShift) and Energica stepping into the game, and other manufacturers being also interested in offering electric motorcycles soon.
KTM is so far the other major player in the electric bike segment with a solid presence in the market with their Freeride E machines. Still, with Zero's continued expansion in Europe and the recent debut in Italy, it looks like the America electric bikes are better represented in foreign (European) markets than the Austrians are across the pond.
2015 and 2016 are going to be very interesting as far as electric motorcycles go, as more brands will deliver their best shot at this segment. Zero has a headstart, but simply can't sleep on it.
