How much do you need to drive in order to stumble upon a McDonalds restaurant? Well, according to the map above, you don’t have to go that far, with 13,900 locations scattered around the states. And it looks like you won’t have to go too far to find an electric charging point either, because there are even more now.
ChargePoint just became the world’s largest and most open EV charging network, recently finishing installing all the necessary equipment for its 18,000th location in the US.

Now, every 8 seconds or so, a driver is connecting hisher electric vehicle to a ChargePoint location and so far, they saved over 4.7 million gallons of gasoline, spared the atmosphere from some 34,7 million pounds of greenhouse gases and did 112 million miles without a drop of petrol.

That’s in theory, because most of the electricity in the US is obtained through burning fossil fuels. But at least they didn’t burned gasoline by themselves, which should count for the initiative.

So, having more charging points than McDonalds restaurants really makes EVs feel like home now? Well, not quite. First of all, you get that problem with electricity obtained from fossil fuel and secondly, most of the stations are located in and around big cities.

Therefore, if you plan a big green road trip cross-country in your Nissan Leaf, you should better stick to trains or wait a bit longer for the network to expand some more. Or even better, wait until someone really puts one of those new batteries into production.

Now, do you want fries with that?
