Yamaha YZF-R3 Recalled for Clutch and Oil Pump Malfunction

Yamaha recalls a number yet unspecified of YZF-R3 motorcycles to solve a clutch malfunction. The defect was reportedly discovered by the Japanese branch of Yamaha, and is, therefore, not the result of a warranty claim or customer complaint.

The current recall was initiated in India, with a little over 900 Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycles identified as being potentially affected by the defect. At the time of writing, no detailed technical information regarding the defect was available, but Yamaha did mention that the parts that are involved are the clutch pressure plate and the oil pump.

Reportedly, these defects have not led to any incidents, crashes or injuries. Also, Yamaha has prepared updated components that will prevent the hazardous situations from occurring in the bikes that are still in stock.

As for the bikes that are already on the street, Yamaha will inform the customers and schedule an appointment at an authorized Iwata dealer. The defective parts will be replaced with new ones that are up to spec free of change.

The bikes recalled in India were manufactured in Yamaha's plant in Indonesia, and rumors indicate that the R25 machine that is sold in Asia, R3's sibling, may have been assembled using the same clutch and oil pump. If this turns out to be true, then we might also hear about a recall targeting Yamaha R25 machines with the same defect. Also, the MT-03 customers could also make some inquiries.

Also, it is expected that the flaws discovered by the Japanese mechanics are present in more than one market, so customers in Europe and North America who bought an R3 might do well and give their dealers a call asking about this recall.

This is not the first such campaign for the R3. In October 2015, Yamaha also recalled several R3 bikes to have their upper triple clamp replaced. Under certain conditions, that clamp could crack and even break, with the consequences of such a thing being easy to fathom. No crashes related to that defect were reported then, either.
