One really popular and long-standing Yamaha small-displacement bikes has just been recalled in Canada, and we’re expecting the recall campaign to be soon extended to the US and more markets. We’re talking about the XT250 model, an air-cooled single-cylinder machine which can be affected by several malfunctions, as Yamaha discovered.
These malfunctions are prone to occur only after running the bike in the top revs for prolonged periods of time, so if you’re not usually riding to the extreme, maybe you’re a bit safer. However, since the recall is extended to the 2013, 2014 and 2015 model years, maybe it’s not a good idea to ignore it.

High revs cause heat which can melt certain parts

Yamaha has determined that revving the engine into the high rpms for a prolonged time could cause the heat to melt the air induction hose. This in turn would expose the fuel injection sub-wiring harness to exhaust gases and their own heat. The plastic insulation of the harness’ wires could melt and cause a short circuit which may stall the engine, increasing the risk of a crash.

Even though there aren’t too many Yamaha XT250s out in the snow these days, it’s a good idea to sober up after the New Year’s Eve parties and contact your nearest Yamaha dealer. The house of Iwata has already instructed them on how to carry out the repairs and has also provided a new air induction hose, air induction pipe and air induction cut-off valve with new ones which comply with the new safety specifications.

In Canada 732 units have been affected, but the number of bikes sold in other market is much higher. So, if you ride a 2013 Yamaha XT250D, a 2014 XT250EL or 2015 XT250FL, you’d better not wait until the spring to have it fixed. Transport Canada did not mention any incidents, crashes or injuries related to this defect.
