Yamaha Trademarks the FJ-09 Name. Good Things on Their Way

Good and thrilling news come from the House of Iwata, as the “FJ-09” name was registered by Yamaha as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The application was made on February 25, 2014 and it refers to “standard characters, without claim to any particular font, style, size, or color.”
This may be a very important and serious hint that Yamaha is thinking about using their all-new triple-cylinder engine for so much more than the FZ-09, (MT-09 in other markets). The trademark is linked to “motorcycles, scooters, three-wheeled scooters and structural parts for all the aforesaid goods,” as the USPTO informs, so things are as clear as it gets. While the trademark alone is not enough proof that Yamaha are readying such a machine, it’s hard to believe that such a move is empty of meaning.

Au contraire, we have even more reasons to believe that Yamaha will take full benefits from the huge momentum the FZ-09 has created and in fact launch more bikes powered by this engine. And taking into account the affordable price the FZ-09 was launched with, it looks like the path is rather clear.

Yamaha could indeed, reveal a 3-cylinder version of the FJ machines, maybe even following the design cues of their modern FJR1300 sport-tourer. A beautiful, inspiring fairing, a bit of a more generous dash with the possibility to expand it by means of navigation systems, smarthphone integration and other touring features are not exactly a long shot for the Tuning Forks.

Comfort may not be exactly on par with the FJR, given the smaller dimensions, but with a reliable mill under the plush seat, Yamaha reliability and an affordable price, the FJ-09 could be the next best thing in the touring world, especially as more and more bikes are heading the 1200cc way…
