Yamaha pulled the wraps off their two new 4-stroke competition bikes, the YZ250F and YZ450F. Yamaha's engineers had four major goals when working on the flagship YZ450F: making the engine smoother and more easy to control while not losing power, better bump absorption and front end grip, better brakes and a new launch control.
The said launch control system (LCS) has revised settings that limit the wheelspin and wheelie tendency in the first and second gear, and does this by monitoring several ECU parameters and adjusting the power delivery. Unlike other systems that reduce the ignition spark rate and retard the ignition, the new Yamaha LCS is said to be more precise and effective.

New camshafts and optimized valve timing produce a reduced overlap while higher lift exhaust cam and new exhaust valve springs reduce exhaust resistance. An optional Yamaha Power Tuner is also available for trackside modifications.

The clutch got a refined boss and shift stopper lever for smoother action, while the front disc grew to a 270 mm diameter. Also in the front, the AOS (Air-Oil-Separate) forks got revised compression and rebound settings, while in the rear, the shock has a 56Nm spring (from 58 Nm). New low-speed and high-speed compression damping settings also make the ride smoother and more reassuring.

On the frame side, the chassis got stiffer and the pegs are mounted 5mm lower. A 60th Anniversary Special Edition trim is also available, with a classic yellow/black speedblock design. The bike is equipped with an Akrapovic silencer, GYTR clutch cover and hand protectors, and will support the Power Tuner. The YZ450F will be available from July or August.

2016 YZ250F is the king of corners

The 2016 YZ250F also got engine revisions, with a new lightweight piston and con rod, and optimized balancer and crank designs. New ECU settings make the bike rev smoother and cooler, with changes in the shifting componentry making the transmission and clutch feel more accurate.

Yamaha also reworked the Air-Oil-Separate (AOS) upside-down fork and added a 270mm front rotor to the game. Like its bigger sibling, the 2016 YZ250F will be available from July-August this year, and a 60th Anniversary Special Edition will be offered for a limited time, sporting the retro yellow-black speedblock livery.
