Rumors arrive from Japan, where it appears like Yamaha is planning to expand family of 3-wheeled vehicles of which the recently-introduced Tricity we’ve just showcased in late March. Now, it looks like the House of Iwata is envisioning a wider-scale development for its 3-wheeled platform, with multiple displacements possibly available soon, covering the needs and expectations of a broader pool of customers.
The photos of the new Tricity machine Yamaha attached to a patent apparently filed for on July 4 show obvious TMAX design cues, even though the general lines are consistent with those of the actual Tricity. The new three-wheeler appears to be larger, with a front air intake protruding down between the wheels, and with the dual headlight array openly speaking about the TMAX.

While the Tricity is powered by an 125cc-class engine, we might see Yamaha going for anything between 250cc and 500cc with this frame, possibly with a big-bore version of the TMAX also in the works, with even more differentiated bodywork, closer to the iconic TMAX shapes.

While we’re definitely going to see something new at the 2014 EICMA this November in Milan, it’s really interesting observing that the less-conventional, 3-wheeled segment is shows signs of being much more than a fad lasting a couple of seasons, like we’ve seen on multiple occasions. More expensive than the usual urban commuters, these vehicles are aimed at riders who are searching for stylish machines, as well. And with the urban traffic growing crazier by the year, and gas prices going up, it’s rather easy to understand the ascension of these cool, new machines among a certain demographic.

As for a 530cc, 46 horsepower proper TMAX with three wheels, this sounds kind of thrilling, don’t you think?
