Yamaha Patents Leaning 3-Wheel Electric Scooter

It looks like Yamaha is working to upgrade the scooter line-up, as visordown got their hands on some patent files which are said to have been forwarded by Yamaha to the US Patent Office. These drawings depict a leaning 3-wheeled scooter which looks exceptionally similar to the EC-03 e-scoot which is currently selling in Europe.

The Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter is however a casual, two-wheeled bike, while the patent sketches show an extra rear wheel added to the existing design. While most of the new 3-wheeled scooters add the extra wheel to the front end, including Yamaha’s very own recently-revealed Tricity, the new design shows a proper, traditional trike setup, but with the convenience of a leaning-type architecture.

Yamaha’s new three-wheeled scooter patent shows dual hub motors, one in each of the rear wheels, and if the new scoot will use the existing power units of the EC-03, we might be looking at a nifty 3.75 horsepower at 2,250 revs, with the current hub motor producing a peak torque of 9.6Nm (7.1 lb-ft) already available at 280 rpm. Even though Yamaha using the same motor would be a natural move, we kind of dream that new, more powerful ones will be used in the final product.

It’s hard to say whether and when will this three-wheeler make appearance, but given the fact that it will be using the existing EC-03 platform, we might be pleasantly surprised not having to actually wait too much. That is, win case Yamaha decides to really expand its electric scooter line-up for real.
