The Alfieri concept car caught everybody’s attention at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, helping Maserati celebrate its 100th birthday in fitting style. Named after the legendary Italian engineer credited with establishing the company that still wears his last name, this car clearly previews their future and we’re hoping it’s not one that’s too distant.
Hints were dropped by Fiat Chrysler CEO that the Alfieri could be put into production in as little as two years, as the platform and engines already exist. The GranTurismo coupe is already an old car, having made its debut in 2007, about the same time as the previous generation M3. Given that fact, 2016 couldn’t come a moment sooner.

However, Fiat doesn’t exactly have the most excellent track record when it comes to putting concepts into production. The Alfa 4C seemed like it was delayed forever and now the Maserati SUV is rumored to have been postponed as well. Without it, their plan to sell 50,000 cars per year by 2015 seems unlikely to happen.

If the Alfieri indeed previews our next GranTurismo, it will truly be a car to behold. However, 2016 will come with totally different challenges as the once pure sportscar is moving closer and closer to electric power. Rumor has it, the Alfieri is built using the Ghibli’s platform and may have a turbo V6 underhood. Maserati has two version of this engine, one making about 350 hp and the other nudging over 400. These would ideally place the coupe into the niches being created by the Jaguar F-Type V6 and V6 S and Porsche’s Carreras.

On looks alone, the Maserati is our winner. But which would you pick?

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
