Durable, fun to fly, easy to control and most of all beautiful, that is how you describe the world’s first all carbon fiber personal drone. This high tech toy is what any gadget lover wishes for and you can help make it become real.
The fact it’s made out of carbon fiber is far from being its only great feature. Dubbed the Carbon Flyer, this baby is packed with technology. It comes with an ultra-low drag delta-wing design, allowing for high speeds and superior control. It uses dual high power motor with differential thrust to steer and no fragile moving parts. Controlled via long range Bluetooth 3.0 and a smartphone app, the drone is currently in development and you can pledge for it on Indiegogo.

According to its maker, the drone’s airframe is assembled using carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy which creates bonds stronger than steel welds. The Carbon Flyer is 14.75 in (35,56 cm) long, 3 in (7.62 cm) high and has a wingspan of 7 in (17.9 cm). Even though it’s quite small the drone has a big range, almost the length of a football field and flying it is very simple. Steering is done by tilting the smartphone left or right, and throttle by sliding the thumb up and down.

The app will show real-time battery life and signal strength indication and the onboard video camera is able to capture impressive 640x480 footage. Carbon Flyer is powered by a rechargeable, hot-swappable lithium polymer battery capable of approximately 3 minutes flight time, but since it’s hot-swappable, with a pocketful of batteries it can fly for long time.

The drone was developed at Trident Design, LLC, an award winning product design and commercialization firm based in Columbus, Ohio. Previous products developed include the PowerSquid and the Onion Googles, Coolest Cooler and others. The Indiegogo has almosst 500 funders and, as we write this article, it’s around $5,000 away from its 50k goal. In other words, people definitely like it.
