Car photography can be done in many ways, which is why some photographers are better than others, or why it's so special when somebody who usually shoots totally different subjects suddenly becomes interested in cars.
These manners of capturing a still image of a car can include different camera work or different post-processing techniques, but regardless of how diverse they are, they always have one thing in common: the actual car.

Well, not for photographer Felix Hernandez they don't. His modus operandi is not like any you can find out there - or if it is, then at least he's taken it to perfection. Audi knew very well what it was getting itself into by hiring him, and there's a good reason for that: if you want to shoot a $160,000 supercar like the R8 hit by an ocean wave, no matter his wages, Felix is the cheapest way of doing it.

That's because the Mexican photographer is well-known for his ability to make scaled models and other types of toys look like the real thing. To do that, all he needs is a camera, a set of lights, and, usually, some flour.

For the Audi shoot, he required a little more than that. He came up with more elaborate props than he normally uses, and he appears to have substituted the flour for sand. It makes sense - why carry a few pounds of the white powder with you if you're going to the beach anyway?

As you can imagine, there is plenty of Photoshop involved to give the images that final, polished look, but the basis comes right out of the camera. You can have a look at the rest of Felix Hernandez's work on his website, even though some of it you might have seen already as some of his series have gone viral on the Internet.

If you have a model car lying around you don't know what to do with and a DSLR camera you bought when thinking you were going to take on photography, then maybe this can inspire you. All you need now is a way to improvise the lighting (they're pretty expensive otherwise) and some flour. Or any other kind of white powder you might have lying around your house in large quantities.
