Widebody madness has gripped the nation. What nation? Japan, of course. Rocket Bunny kits had a slow start, with many customers being reluctant to drill straight into the bodies of their cars. However, the number of packages now available is set at over 9,000.
You don't even need to spend a year in the hyperbolic time chamber or ask Vegeta what the scouters say because we have all the intel available. The sign says this VW Beetle RSR with a widebody package from Alpil has been shown at the SEMA show. But nobody seems to have seen it, so we'll treat it like a debut.
Alpil showed the turquoise Beetle at the Tokyo Auto Salon in November and has since brought it over to the Osaka Motor Show, where we caught our first glimpse.
The Alpil kit is supposed to give the Beetle a 911 look, and it works with any model, not just the GSR. Starting off at the front, we see a new front bumper with hints of the GT3 sportscar sprinkled in the shape of the spoiler. Of course, the already bulbous fenders of the Beetle are made to look even larger by the addition of plastic flares that bolt directly on them.
It gave Alpil room to install much wider tires. While the car in this video has clean 20-inch 5-spoke white wheels with green dishes, we found an earlier version that had retro gold BBS's.
The rear is probably the most interesting view. Just like Rocket Bunny kits, this package has fenders that break off sharply at the rear, allowing you to see a portion of the tire. The Beetle has also been gifted with a central exhaust system a la 911 GT3 and a huge truck wing.
Yours for JPY600,000 ($5,000), this package is the only one of its kind for the Beetle 8P, and will trick your friends into thinking that you're buddies with Tanner Foust. Just make sure you have your mom's permission to trash her Bug.
Editor's note: We're not 100% sure, but the green paint is probably fluorescent. You can see it when the camera zooms in on the stripes of the seat.
