Why Aren't All BMW R1200GS Commercials as Cool as This?

I know some BMW fans would just grind their teeth, but I will say this anyway: the R1200GS, much like the rest of the 1200 cc bikes are fat cows. Of course, they can sometimes become agile cows, but this will not modify their dimensions and weight, and for most riders, the will still feel cumbersome and not exactly the first choice when it comes to riding hard on unwelcoming terrain.

Anyway, we know that these bikes CAN perform much better when ridden accordingly and can offer more than what the common rider can squeeze out of them. The video below is the perfect proof that a fat cow can look exceedingly well in the right hands, and can rival most of the smaller off-road action-focused bikes. Truth be told, such a video would make ten thousand times a better commercial for the BMW R1200GS than most ads we have seen so far.

The glory days are not gone, why isn’t BMW relating to them?

Well, I admit that this question is almost haunting me. Since BMW has such a reputation in the business and has won important races in the past, why is nobody willing to exploit this symbolic capital? A brand’s heritage is one of the strong decision factors when it comes to buying that maker’s products, and what better way to stress out the strong genes of a bike than relate it to the glorious past?

Even more, why not choosing to expose what the bike can really do instead of showing the same old “politically correct”, corporate imagery? I mean, BMW has been bragging about the R1200GS since day one, and the older models went around the world with Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor but nothing of these otherwise great deeds is any longer reflected in the way the bike is showcased to the potential customers.

Is BMW so laid back and are their R1200GS sales faring that well (looks like yes and yes) that nobody is interested in being really creative when it comes to presenting a bike for what it can really do? I am not a GS basher, but seeing action movies from other makers DOES incite me to joke and call names, really.
I know for a fact that the R1200GS can be aggressive (even though not 990 Adventure-aggressive) in a lot of scenarios and I do believe that everybody would have something to win if BMW moved their behinds and went for some serious action on a corporate level. Of course, I’m not in a position to tell them how they should run their business, but I can definitely tell that there is so much which can be improved.

Anyway, kudos to those who managed to make this short and chapeau bas to the R1200GS driver for his sure-handed skills around this abandoned children camp. Something, including the bike’s plate, tells us this is taking place somewhere in the former Soviet space. Does any of our readers know more on this?
