Fans of the older Volkswagen models and their many tuning projects have probably noticed the 16Vampir before. It's of course the nickname for the special first-generation Golf built by the guys at Boba Motoring and it's fast, really fast.
Since the 16Vampir is a stripped down machine built for insane acceleration, it can pretty much outrun any normal supercar. So its makers had to do a bit of lateral thinking to find a worthy adversary. What they picked is another old Golf, this time a Mk2 built by Donkey Tec. Watching the two go up against each other is like watching pensioner who can do the minute mile.
As for the tech that makes these record runs possible, the Boba car uses a modified 2.0-liter 16-valve running 53psi of boost and powered on E85 racing fuel. Instead of a normal gearbox, the 16Vampir uses a 4-speed dog box to slam in cogs much faster, just like a dragster. This really isn't something that you can use every day, but then what would you expect from a 40-year old Golf that's as fast as a Bugatti?
As far as we've been able to find out, the Donkey Tec Golf runs a turbocharged VR6, not a four-cylinder like the other car. It seems the car was finished in 2012 and suffered a nasty crash at this year's Worthersee GTI meet. In the next video, it loses to the 16Vampir, but it's still a cool car, right?
