A few days ago we took a deep dive into the 2015 Mustang Convertible, as Ford released more details on the brand new drop top pony car.
Besides getting a recontoured trunklid, as well as other minor design modifications that set it apart from the fastback model, the convertible was also fitted with a new top that consists of a full fabric outer layer for the roof and a full inner headliner that encloses the structure.

Between the two, Ford introduced a 10-millimeter (0.4-inch) insulation pad that helps reduce cabin noise when the top is up. More importantly, the roof can now be folded/unfolded in half the time compared to the current-generation Mustang thanks to an entirely new electromechanical drive system.

Much quieter than the previous electro-hydraulic design, the electromechanical drive system can be activated using a button placed on the center console, but not before releasing the top via the center-mounted latch on the windshield frame.

In case you haven’t seen how this system works yet, the video below might come in handy. The roof retracts in about six to seven seconds, which ain’t bad at all.

Scheduled to go on sale in the fourth quarter of the year, the convertible version of the 2015 Ford Mustang will be offered with the same engines fitted in the fastback version. A base 3.7-liter V6 that will generate at least 300 hp and 270 lb-ft, a 2.3-liter EcoBoost that’s estimated to deliver more than 305 hp and 300 lb-ft, and a Coyote V8 that will produce more than 420 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.
