Watch Ferrari Push the LaFerrari XX Prototype to Suspension Failure

Last time we heard from the track special version of the LaFerrari, the XX, our spy photographers used their unofficial chronographs to clock it round the Nurburgring. The LaFerrari XX got a 6:35, which would make it faster than anything else of its kind. Alas, the route to making such a claim official is longer and more winding than it may seem.

Case in point with the LaFerrari XX test vehicle in the video below - the Prancing Horse’s engineers were recently pushing the prototype hard on their Fiorano home turf. Apparently, they were pushing it too hard, with the hypercar experiencing what appears to be some sort of rear suspension failure.

Towards the end of the clip, we see the passenger’s side rear wheel go out of place during a left hander that was approached in a drift. This is not a case of rear wheel steering or extreme camber play, but an issue.

While that will be long forgotten, the aforementioned aim of Ferrari engineers won’t. You see, the LaFerrari XX isn’t street legal, so it doesn’t enter the “usual” Nurburgring battle. Instead, it fights others of its breed, with this record currently being held by the Pagani Zonda R, which set a lap time of 6:47.5 back in 2010.

Don’t expect extra muscle though. Since the LaFerrari is motivated by a 963 hp hybrid powetrain, the focus will be placed on making this more aggressive rather than have it deliver extra grunt at the top.

With such cars, the electronics are just as important as the mechanical hardware, so the Italians are spending many nights working to introduce modulation changes.

As for the great responsibility that comes with such great power, the XX will be gifted with new aerodynamic elements that are expected to offer impressive downforce results. Aside for the troublesome aforementioned suspension tweaks, this monster will talk to the road via slick tires.

We expect the LaFerrari XX to follow the regular Prancing Horse customer racing rules. In other words, Ferrari will handle the vehicles, while owners will be flown to various events around the world in order to manhandle their machines in controlled conditions.
