Watch and Learn: Yellow Lines Don't Forgive BMW S1000RR

If anything, there’s one thing all riders can be 100% sure: the yellow lines seldom forgive anyone. This is the lesson a BMW S1000RR rider learned the hard way, during an outing on a twisty road and after he rode his machine across the center lines.

Now, crossing the yellow lines usually happens because of the wrong line around a bend, and this less-than-ideal trajectory can be the result of multiple factors. Out the of multitude of causes which might push a rider over the yellow line, understeering due to excessive speed and the lack of turning skills are probably the most common, with both of them often shaking hands to create even greater damage.

Up to a point, understeering caused by excessive speed can be compensated by leaning more into the turn. The force trying to “push” the rider to the exterior are compensated by the leaning angle , with the resulting force lines adding more weight on the tire and increasing grip… to the point of the physical adherence between tires and asphalt.

Scary as it may look, leaning more into a turn can, at times, help riders maintain their line and avoid running off the road or in the way of incoming traffic. Still, this maneuver is directly linked with the riding skills of the person and its applicability - rather limited.

Even when showing off a bit, it’s a very good idea to ride responsibly and try to avoid running the bike over the yellow lines. The paint used for the road markings has a completely different texture and grip than asphalt and usually these figures are much worse in the “bike stability equation”, and again, it will almost never forgive a “trespasser”, be it even [insert your favorite WSBK or MotoGP rider name here].
