VW Turns Beetle Into E-Bugster Electric Concept

For a while now, we’ve all been wondering what the mystery Volkswagen model debuting in Detroit was, and it seems that the rumors saying it’s a convertible Beetle were close but not close enough. The funky-looking car you see here is the E-Bugster Concept that will officially bow at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show today.

Looking much like one of Porsche’s strip-down conversions (think Boxster Spyder), the E-Bugster is lower and sleeker than its 2012 Beetle base car origins, thanks in part to that custom roof.

The revolutionary concept is powered by an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack that offer an output of 114 hp and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft). Also, it has an estimated range of about 100 miles. Recharging it using a conventional socket takes a while, but an 80% quick charge can be done in 30 minutes.
