Volkswagen today announced a comprehensive suite of changes for the Polo supermini. We've already covered the interior, exterior, engines and tech side. Now, we bring you the very last piece of this German puzzle, the low volume models.
Without actually showing the car, Volkswagen said the Polo warm hatch, otherwise known as the BlueGT, will get a 10 PS boost. This car is powered by a 1.4-liter engine, the same one that goes into the Golf, SEAT Leon and Audi A3. However, this is no ordinary engine, it's actually the first small-engine application of cylinder deactivation. VW calls it Cylinder on Demand, with cylinder 2 and 3 cutting out under low loads.
Perhaps more interesting is the announcement that a "range-topping Polo GTI with increased power will be available next year." We think this is indication not of a small power boost for the 1.4 TSI that currently powers the GTI, but of a new engine.
A report from Chinese media recently stated there would be a new Polo GTI powered by a 1.8-liter TSI engine. This is the same engine that in bigger cars like the Golf or SEAT Leon makes 180 PS. What kind of power increase do you guys think this hot hatch needs: 10 PS or 20 PS to match the Clio?
