VW Golf Sportsvan Concept Unveiled, Is Actually the Golf Plus

It used to be the case that concept cars were purely exercises of the imagination. But designers have recognized there's no point showing people cars they won't be able to drive and have switched to preview concepts. But VW's new Golf Sportsvan revealed ahead of the 2013 IAA is a concept that isn't really a concept.

From the 100% normal interior to the 100% normal body to the 100% engines, everything about this concept is production-ready. Just shave an inch off the diameter of those wheels and change the name from Sportsvan to Golf Plus and you're there.

So then, this is by all means the next Golf Plus. A car like this is measured in millimeters, not emotional response to its design. Based on the now famous MQB platform, the production-intent MPV concept is 83mm longer than the Golf 7 and rides on a 48mm longer wheeelbase. It's also 126mm taller and 8mm wider.

Standard cargo volume is 498 liters but the rear bench can slide forward to create another 87 liters of space. You can, of course, fold them and even fold the front passenger seat to fit objects that are 2,484mm long. Imagine the possibilities this opens next time you're at IKEA.

VW says you'll have a full range of engines available with the car, from the 85 HP 1.2 TSI to the 150 PS 2.0 TSI. The most efficient will be a BlueMotion model fitted with the 110 PS 1.6 TDI and capable of 3.7 liters per 100 km and producing 95 grams per kilometer.

As a concept, the Golf Sportsvan is very boring, especially when you compare it to the new C4 Picasso. But it's probably going to be a nice, comfortable MPV to live with.
