VW Golf GTE Sport Concept Has Gullwing Doors and a Hybrid Heart

As I write this, Worthersee is becoming a VAG heaven, with fans and maniacs mad about VW Group's models are gathering in Austria to celebrate a slice of European auto culture. And that's a pretty good reason for Volkswagen to sing along and premiere some concepts.

The Golf GTE Sport prototype might look determined to tickle our green side but, in fact, the concept only cares about performance and a track-oriented setup.

How can we tell? Well, it borrowed a 1.6-liter TSI engine from the rally-spec Polo R WRC. But engineers blessed the unit with 299 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque plus two little sidekicks. As you might have guessed, we're talking about two electric motors.

The first one was placed in the front, carefully inserted in the six-speed DCT gearbox's casing, and brings 115 HP and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque to the table. The second electric motor sits on the rear axle and adds another 115 HP and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft). Blend all this figures together and voilà, you get a powertrain that pushes 400 HP and 670 Nm (495 lb-ft) of torque.

The 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time is estimated at 4,3 seconds while top speed is reached at 174 mph (280 km/h). Not bad for a VW Golf, we might add.

Visually, the Golf GTE Sport concept stands out through a pair of gullwing doors and a wide body kit heavily carved with carbon fiber. The interior tells the same story since the steering column is also made of carbon fiber, and traditional gauges have been replaced by sci-fi digital displays. The driver will simply be seated in a cocoon-like area, so the only thing left for him to do is focus on the road and keep that pedal glued to the floor.
