Everybody knows what the name of the Volkswagen brand means. But the German car company that blossomed thanks the Beetle is now offering ever more advanced cars for people willing to spend more. As for the Beetle, it's more of a fashion statement that might be discontinued.
That even extends to the smallest vehicles they offer, as the Up! is more expensive than most of its rivals. However, there is one model in India which could still be called a "People's Car", this, the brand new Ameo sedan.
Most of us Europeans look at the Ameo as a Polo with a trunk piece glued on. However, making the car must not have been easy. Because the Indian government thinks it knows what's best, the Ameo can only be 4 meters long, virtually the same as the hatchback. So there's not much room to squeeze in sedan bits.
Designers moved the rear wheels a bit further inwards and added extra details to the front to make it look muscular. The result is undeniably quirky, especially thanks to the raised suspension. We feel like comparing it to some model years of the Beetle which had flat windshields.
We picked an Indian review from a publication called Car Dekho. The reviewer, Cyrus Dhabhar, goes through all the details. So you don't need to know anything about the local market to understand what's going on.
From the infotainment system to the engine, the Ameo is probably the most premium car for the money. However, safety is still an issue, and you can compare the build quality to a VW Caddy.
Even we learned something. Apparently, most of the people who buy a sub-4-meter sedan prefer to be driven by a chauffeur. What's more, Volkswagens are for people who prefer handling over ride comfort. What?
