We honestly found a lot of things to like about the Volvo V40 Cross Country when we tested it last year, perhaps the most important being the 5-cylinder turbo engine it came with, a relic from the past with more character than most modern engines. We are more than a little story to announce that it's being replaced with a 4-cylinder turbo, but perhaps it's all for the better.
The new T5 AWD drivetrain fitted to the V40 Cross Country belongs to the Drive-E modular family of engines they launched recently, cleaner and more efficient than ever before. Going from 5 to 4 cylinders has cost the V40 some of its power, as output has dropped from 254 to 245 PS, while torque is now 350 Nm as opposed to 360 Nm. Still, it's more than you get with an Audi 2.0 TFSI or the equivalent "250" model from Mercedes-Benz.

The upside is the V40 Cross Country T5 AWD is basically the cleanest car in its segment. Emissions are now only 148 g/km, compared to the Audi Q3 TFSI Quattro 177 PS (179 g/km), the BMW X1 xDrive28i xLine auto (171-168 g/km) or the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4Matic (151 g/km).

Not only do you get all-wheel drive with the T5 model, but Volvo has also replaced the 6-speed manual with a new 8-speed with paddles on the steering wheel for manual gear shifting.

“Volvo Cars is continuing to evolve the V40 Cross Country with this powertrain upgrade. The combination of the Drive-E T5 engine with AWD will give adventurous customers the power to explore, and all the control they need to be confident in all road conditions,” says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

Deliveries of the 2015 model year V40 with its powerful 2-liter engine will start mid-fall in Europe, with a global roll-out over the following months.
